How I pick and choose which trends to buy into (+ Sezane new arrivals)
hint: take a look at your surroundings
Every season we all want to talk about the TRENDS. What’s IN, what’s happening, what’s now, I need new now now now. It’s actually not about the new trends, by the way, it’s called season fatigue and you’re looking to start anew! Happens to all of us. Winter in on the tail end here in Chicago and we are O-V-E-R it come March (even though it just started snowing as I type this). So, I, for one, and happy to talk about the trends. And I love experimenting with trends as a way to express myself, evolve, and keep my wardrobe fresh.
But before we talk what’s hot and new for spring, let’s talk about my thought process in how I decide what trend I even want to try. I take a somewhat methodical approach:
Trends are like a buffet—take what you like and leave the rest. Wish I could attribute this quote, but I saw it on Pinterest once and it really stuck because it’s so true. A great wardrobe doesn’t incorporate every trend out there—just what YOU like—and that’s what creates your own style.
Does it make sense in my life? It’s kind of like when those Hunter wellies were hugely popular in the early 2010s (they’re coming back, btw); I always wondered why the folks in the desert were wearing them. Does it make sense where you live, your day to day, your job, etc? If not, best to pass.
Can I pair it with someone already in my closet? This is a huuuuge marker for me. If yes, then it’s a no brainer to try it.
And speaking of trends, a brand I have been wearing for years that fits seamlessly into my wardrobe is Sezane. I wouldn’t say it’s the antithesis of trendy because they do create on-trend pieces but so many of them are instantly classics that they release year after year (especially their coats and sweaters!).
Sezane releases product on a weekly basis and their new spring pieces are amazing. (Sizing tip - it’s a european brand so I think the bottoms run very trim—I tend to size up) Here’s what I recently purchased (or own and it was re-released):
Tie-front white blouse - No one can compete with the prices or quality of a Sezane white blouse.
Tomboy striped shirt - Have owned for years and they always re-release this color combo.
Leopard jeans - A trend item for SURE but I have worn them a lot.
Clyde trench - The checked cotton lining itself is a reason to buy (I’ve owned for years).
Hector coat - Can’t wait to receive this one!
Polka dot pants - Sezane does party pants SO well. I am pumped for these to arrive.
